Jack read the package passed to it from the bartender did not understand. The man pointed to a point on the other side of the bar, where he was the Doctor, in response to her questioning look, he nodded his head causing him to look to his left.
At that moment a young officer sat on the stool beside her, placing his cap on the counter.
- No! - Jack shouted angrily, standing up suddenly and ran among the patrons of the bar until you reach the doctor outside the room and stop his escape, taking him by the arm and making him turn.
- Hello Jack, - a flat tone that contrasted with the usual enthusiasm of the last lord of time.
- I do not want consolation, - said Jack strongly, noting the only time the air discharged from the old friend.
- There is nothing I can do, - said the Doctor sadly triggering his anger.
- You were not on Earth when it happened! You can go back and save Ianto and Steven - his voice broke inexorably to pronounce the name of her lover and her grandson both died because of him.
The Doctor sighed slowly, looking for the right words.
- There are moments that are fixed points in time, no matter how much we would like to change, interfere only worsens things.
The pain was too much for the captain to feel right.
- It was only a child, it was my nephew! - Protested strongly.
- I know Jack, but I can not return it, - he said softly, fighting the impulse to embrace friend.
A thought suddenly infiltrated his mind.
- If you were left alone at Thames House would not change the final outcome but ...
- Ianto would still be alive! - Concluded for him, a gleam of hope in his eyes.
- It 's what you want Jack? Could you live knowing that I could save only one of the two?
clouded gaze of Captain while in the blink of an eye relived the death of Ianto.
- I did not believe that this was really happening, I have not said it was the best thing that had happened in over a hundred years, I did not even say that I loved him, - he said with tears in his eyes.
The Doctor was silent for a long time before finding.
- Jack, you will break your heart when you see it die again.
The captain ran his hand over his face, erasing the trail left by tears, a new determination in his eyes.
- No. He has the right to a long and happy life, and can only have it without me. I will never return to Earth, not in the near future, at least. Foul Doctor, by the possibility that I've taken. The Lord nodded
time, this would be his farewell gift to the Captain Jack Harkness, a small thing compared to what their meeting was shaken and changed the life of man from the 51 th century and intended to continue live for thousands of years.
He started to turn around and get to the TARDIS when a hand rested on his arm again.
- Is everything okay? - Asked Jack, once again able to look beyond their grief.
- Almost, - replied the other, the shadow of a sad smile on his face, the mere thought of the little time he had left.
Jack felt the torment behind those eyes that reminded constantly lit up with excitement and hugged him impulsively. A time travel with the Doctor was his dream, was not a bad life.
- Can I do anything? Want to come with you?
- Travelling on my own now, - said the Doctor, taking a step back and extricating himself from.
- But we shall meet again, right? - Insisted pervaded by an ominous sign.
- Oh, I see more than you might imagine, Jack, - exclaimed. That he had already lived all their future meetings preferred to keep it.
- I better go, I have someone to be saved and an event that I can not fail, - added a hint of a military salute to which Jack replied, snapping to attention and murmuring a thank you.
The unmistakable sound of the TARDIS leaving Jack collected his thoughts. After evaluating the possibility he decided to return to the bar. He had something important to celebrate and perhaps, if he was still there, Alonso could keep him company.
